Rejected in the DC Meeting? Why Your Synopsis Failed (And How to Fix It)

The scene is familiar. You walk into the conference room. Three senior professors (your Doctoral Committee) are waiting. You present your slides with passion.

Then comes the silence. And then, the questions:

  • “This is not new.”
  • “Where is the research gap?”
  • “Why did you choose this algorithm? It’s outdated.”

You walk out with a “Resubmission” order. Your registration is delayed by another 6 months.

At PhD India, we know that the Synopsis (or Research Proposal) is the hardest hurdle to clear because it requires you to predict the future. You have to sell an idea you haven’t built yet. Here is why most proposals get rejected and how to ensure yours gets the “Approved” stamp next time.

1. The “Vague Problem” Syndrome

Professors hate vague statements like “I want to improve cloud security.”

  • The Fix: Be specific.
  • Weak: “I will study HR practices in IT companies.”
  • Strong: “I will analyze the impact of ‘Work-From-Home’ policies on the attrition rate of mid-level female managers in Tier-1 Indian IT firms.” The more specific your population and variable, the harder it is for them to reject it.

2. The “Old References” Red Flag

If your “Literature Review” cites papers from 2015 or 2018, your idea is already dead. In fields like CS, Management, and Pharma, 2018 is ancient history.

  • The Fix: Your synopsis must cite at least 15-20 papers from the last 3 years (2023-2026). This proves to the committee that you are solving a current problem, not one that was solved a decade ago.

3. The Missing “Research Gap”

You explained what others did. But you didn’t explain what they failed to do.

  • The Fix: You need a dedicated slide/section called “Identified Research Gap.”
  • “Sharma (2024) analyzed X using Method A. Gupta (2025) analyzed X using Method B. However, NO ONE has yet analyzed X using Method C in the context of the Indian market. That is my gap.” This creates the logical necessity for your research.

4. Methodology Mismatch

You cannot say you will use “Deep Learning” if you don’t have the data for it. You cannot say you will survey “5,000 people” if you don’t have the budget.

  • The Fix: Feasibility. The committee rejects topics they think you cannot finish. We help you design a Methodology that is ambitious enough to be a PhD, but realistic enough to actually finish in 3 years.

Conclusion

A Synopsis isn’t just a form; it is a sales pitch. You are convincing the university to invest in you.

Don’t go into your next DC meeting unprepared. Send your draft to PhD India. We will review your references, sharpen your problem statement, and ensure your proposal is rejection-proof.
