“Is Your Journal Fake?” How to Avoid the ‘Predatory’ Trap in PhD Publication

The clock is ticking. You need 2 papers published to submit your thesis. You get an email: “Guaranteed Publication in Scopus Index Journal! Acceptance in 24 Hours! Low Fee!”

You pay the money. You get the acceptance letter. You submit it to your University. And then the nightmare begins. The Dean rejects your paper. “This is a Cloned Journal,” they say. “It is not in the UGC-CARE list.”

Your money is gone. Your paper is wasted. And your PhD is delayed by 6 months.

At PhD India, we see this tragedy happen every week. The academic publishing world is full of sharks preying on desperate students. Here is how to spot a “Fake” journal before you pay a single rupee.

1. The “24-Hour Acceptance” Red Flag

Real peer review takes time. A legitimate Scopus/Web of Science journal sends your paper to experts. They read it, critique it, and ask for revisions. This takes weeks or months. If a journal promises acceptance in 24 to 48 hours, they are not reading your paper. They are just checking your credit card. Rule of Thumb: If it’s too fast to be true, it’s a scam.

2. The “Cloned” Journal (The Most Dangerous Trick)

This is sophisticated fraud. Scammers find a real, dormant journal (e.g., “Journal of Icelandic History”). They create a fake website that looks exactly like the real one. They hijack the title and the ISSN number. You think you are submitting to the real journal, but you are submitting to a fake website run by hackers. The Fix: Always verify the URL through the official https://www.google.com/search?q=Scopus.com source list or the UGC-CARE portal. Never trust a link sent via WhatsApp or Email.

3. The “Everything” Scope

Legitimate journals are specific. A “Civil Engineering” journal will not publish a paper on “English Literature.” Predatory journals want money from everyone. If you see a journal titled “International Journal of Science, Arts, Management, and Technology,” run away. No serious academic journal covers every topic under the sun.

4. UGC-CARE is the Bible

In India, the UGC-CARE List is the only list that matters. If the journal is not in Group I or Group II of the UGC-CARE list at the time of publication, your university will not accept it. Warning: Journals get removed from the list every quarter. You must check the status today, not based on a list from last year.

Conclusion

Publication is mandatory, but it shouldn’t be a gamble. Don’t risk your PhD on a shortcut.
